Tiramisu

One of my great loves in dessert is tiramisu. I've made it a few times over the years, and this recipe has always been my go-to because it is one of the most straightforward recipes out there and it is so classical in taste. No fancy egg foam ( zabaglione), so it's just a matter of mixing the cream layer and assembling. Now I actually have never used ladyfingers to make tiramisu, mostly because it's out of my way to get the stuff, and it's usually kinda pricey and I don't know what I'd do with the leftovers. So I use pound cake. I always can find a use for extra pound cake! When I have the time, I'll make my own, but I am heartily in favor of using whatever pound cake you can get your hands on. In fact, on this occasion it had been my intent to buy pound cake; however I was foiled by Costco's assorted seasonal pound cakes (e.g. pumpkin streusel) replacing their normal plain pound cake 3-packs. So I came home and baked a pound cake from Dor...

I live in "Stiller Country"...where the blood of its inhabitants run black and gold. Although we aren't crazy sports fans, we do follow the Steelers for the entire football season and we like to do a lot of armchair coaching all throughout. The great thing about the fanaticism of Steelers' fans is the sense of regional culture that makes living here unique. And the Steelers...well, let's just say that you can count on them to make any season full of drama and suspense. My department was no exception, and we were told to bring "tailgating food." I guess tailgating food = cake to me, because what I decided to make was a black and gold swirled bundt cake. I used the Orange Ricotta Pound Cake with Marmalade Glaze from Cake Keeper Cakes by Lauren Chattman. You c...

Mary the Food Librarian is baking bundt cakes galore! She is over halfway on her journey to bake 30 bundts in the 30 days leading up to National Bundt Day, November 15. Her dedication, obsession, and passion has inspired many a food blogger to take a turn at making these fun-shaped cakes. I tried the Cardamom Vanilla Pound Cake for the Halloween party in my department this week. It was delicious! The cardamom was a strong, sweet flavor that really made this moist pound cake unique. Based on my personal preferences, I think the cardamom could have been toned down just a wee bit, and the vanilla flavor ramped up a wee bit, but it was great nevertheless! I served it with a quick strawberry sauce (described in an earlier post) and whipped cream. I think the strawberry sauce really complemented the cake well, although I'm sure ice cream would have been even better!! No cake was left at the end of the day to bring home to Michael, so I'd say other people found it delicious as ...
